Astaxanthin:
Astaxanthin is part of the cartenoid family and is what gives shellfish and flamingos their red colour. Molecular Nutrition and Food Research reports in 2011, that Astaxanthin, extracted from marine algae, is a very potent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory substance with wide systemic health benefits from radiation protection, to eye (Cataract, ARMD and Glaucoma), brain, lung and heart health. It also helps against cancers, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, gastrointestinal diseases, gastric ulcers, liver diseases, and male infertility, induced auto renal failure and taken regularly also protects against strokes. It also helps against dementia, arthritis and other chronic inflammatory diseases.
Astaxanthin is 14 times stronger as an anti-oxidant that Vit-E and at least an order of magnitude more effective than other antioxidants. Unlike other anti-oxidants, Astaxanthin can handle multiple free radicals simultaneously. It is 65 times more potent than Vit-C and 54 times more powerful than beta carotene. Astaxanthin protects both water and fat soluble parts of the cell. This helps in slowing down the ageing process. It is very beneficial for skin health.
It is best taken as a supplement, usually 4 mg to a maximum of 12 mg daily, with a Tbsp of healthy fat, butter, coconut oil or ghee, to optimize absorption. It is deemed safe at even 500 mg per day. The effects will be seen in 2 to 3 months.
