In the old days, wealth mostly came from agriculture and the landlords treated the farm workers as serfs. Then came the Industrial Age when he mostly illiterate workers needed the protection of the collective bargaining power of Unions to avoid exploitation. Under the Communist ideology Capitalists were seen as being selfish and profit oriented crooks and regulations were passed accordingly. It is only in modern times with the greatly increased literacy rates and knowledge of the rights of the employees and the easy availability of communication and of jobs at the skilled levels, that we can see the employee being able to deal with the employer directly from a position of relative strength. Hence, Unions are really unnecessary and the onerous labour laws need to be greatly revised or even done away with.
