Marriage – When to Quit

Quitting a marriage in circumstances where there is abuse or addiction or serial unfaithfulness is an easy decision and best taken at the earliest. In other circumstances this question is too difficult to offer a definitive answer to. But some research indicates when your spouse might make the move and being aware of it may help determine your choice of action.

Julie Brines and Brian Serafini analysed fourteen years of filings for divorce in the USA, and detected a distinct seasonal rhythm, with peaks forged by domestic rituals and family calendars; this is likely to be generally applicable. The end of the school year, the end of a festival, is a time when people finally stop trying to keep things together for the sake of children or stop pretending to be happy. Consider yourself warned.

However, most importantly – Don’t give up on a True person in search of a perfect person because perfection is a fantasy but truth is always a reality.

Career evaluation and selection

Do something that creates wealth rather than something that merely transfers it.

What career should you pursue? – A socially productive one of course! – advises Stephen Landsburg in his book ‘The Big Questions’. By and large the best way to be sure you are doing something useful is when somebody is willing to pay you to do it. Your compensation is a pretty good measure of your social contribution. Do something that creates wealth rather than something that merely transfers it.

You choose which career path to take. Take the path of work and commitment, a path that leads to somewhere you want to be. Choose a role model and strive to live up to that model.

Also, seek a career that allows you to do work you enjoy doing. Work then will no longer be drudgery, a tiresome task but something to look forward to, something more like play and a source of even greater
satisfaction as you stretch yourself to achieve more.

Select a career that has long prospects. Seek to be at the cutting edge of technological progress or in a ‘Sunrise’ industry and not in a ‘Sunset’ industry. Recognize the rapidly growing opportunities in the Services sector.

It would be wise of you to keep on learning and developing greater knowledge and new skills that will allow you to keep abreast of the demands of newer work requirements in the present times of rapid obsolescence of old jobs. Rapid and disruptive changes are the order of the day and if you don’t make the effort to keep learning you may find yourself left out, especially in these times of AI/GAI.

Career choices are often abandoned or regretted. Business decisions are frequently flawed. Personal choices are also, often made erroneously, whether it is for financial planning or starting relationships or allowing work to interfere with family life. However, do note the elderly in hindsight, have too many regrets about why they didn’t take time to smell the roses are share in the experiencing of valuable family memories. Make the effort now to avoid such regrets later.
