Minority – What is it?

Faith, Justice, Law & Order,Public Arena

If Madrassas and Christian Schools are considered protected institutions, why not Vedic Gurukuls or other Schools? Perhaps it is better that all educational institutions, even if run by Private or Non-State funded bodies, be compelled to ensure a common and general education syllabus and of Moral/Social/Ethical classes where lessons about the Country’s history and culture and about comparative religions are also, taught (See – ‘Religious Cultures & Dharmic Culture’). This will lead to better understanding and empathy and mindfulness of each other amongst the populations, also, enable all groups to attain to standardized levels of education and skills, and thus to proper employment and to a harmonious Society.

Finally what about other minorities based not on religion or caste or race but on age, gender and disability?

As U.S. President Hubert.H.Humphrey said – “The moral test of a Government is how that Government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children, those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly, and those who are in the shadow of life, the needy and the handicapped”. Aren’t these categories of people and transgender people also a minority of one sort or the other and who definitely need better consideration?

The Ministry of Minority Welfare needs to be done away with or greatly revamped to meet the needs of all the above and really be a Ministry of Welfare of ALL people including Minorities as may be defined as above. (See – Public Policies – Making them Right!)

Conclusion

The concept of what or who constitutes a minority and where, will clarify what protection such minorities need from others, or what extra consideration they need from the Government. Restricting the definition of a minority to only religion or caste distorts the system and is divisive. The Country needs to revamp its outlook on Minorities as recommended above.
