Finally: Training for First Aid

Emergency Medical Care and proper response to all types of accidents is essential. Hence, such training should be extensively available and people encouraged to undergo it.

The Community Based Organizations can also, organize visits to EMRI and even to the hospitals to allow selected youngsters and relevant persons in the community to see and understand how accident victims should be handled or more importantly NOT handled.

They can also, work with the relevant authorities, and with organizations such as the NCC and the EMRI, to offer standardized training at schools and colleges and award certificates of capability to those who attain to set levels of First Aid, on similar lines as for Life guards and Scouts/Guides skill awards. To encourage wide participation, such awards should carry some weightage for College Entrance Examinations.

In most cases the accident victims need emergency care and immediate transfer to nearby hospitals. It is therefore essential that facilities like EMRI are expanded and properly supported to enable such transit to be as quick as possible. Finally, the Staff and Doctors at ALL clinics and hospitals need to be able to at least stabilize the condition of such patients at the earliest, for transfer to a more comprehensive facility if they are not equipped to provide the necessary care themselves. Such skills too should be a necessary part of their medical education curriculum and should call for regular (bi-annual) upgradation/requalification. Starting with requiring medical graduates to serve 12-18 months in rural PHC’s, as part of a team of at least three medical graduates under a fully qualified doctor, before according them permanent registration. This will ensure an improved level of Trauma Care at every PHC/Clinic/Hospital.
