Water Crisis – the Solution

Conclusion

The problem of drought and flood can best be resolved by river-linking (See-‘The Grand Irrigation and Power System-GIPS’). The earth has more than enough water to meet all the needs of the people on it. Only collection, treatment and transmission to where it is needed remain a problem. We need to develop technological solutions to this problem and to prevent misuse of water and must also, ensure water is charged at a reasonable rate. Since the water crisis is purely ‘man made’, proper use of water and development of appropriate technology can easily resolve such a crisis.

Annexure

Technology for Domestic and Drinking water:

  1. ‘Sling shot’ technology developed by Dean Kamen, provides upto 1000 ltrs/day of pharmaceutical grade injectable water from almost any sort of water source using the power equivalent to that of a hair dryer.
  2. ‘Life saver’ bottles developed by Michael Pritchard use nano filters to produce upto 6000 ltrs of drinkable water from brackish water before needing a change of filter. A jerry-can version of the system can produce up to 25,000 ltrs of water, enough for a family of 4 for 3 years at a cost of only Rs. 0.35 per day to work. Similar smaller bottles are also, being developed in India which need to be further encouraged.
  3. Solar powered Desalination Plants developed by Israel produce 3500 ltrs of R.O. filtered and re-mineralized water every 90 mins and can be cleared and re-operated every 90 mins.
  4. Nano H2O a company based in Los Angeles, U.S.A., has developed a filter that will use 20 percent less energy while producing 70 percent more water than an equivalent cost RO plant.
  5. Technology for Condensing Water from water vapour in air is being developed in India. It However, needs further support to commercialize.
